What is the cost of your drawings?
We do not sell drawings and calculations. We offer our expertise to the Clients, in form of design ideas, renderings, drawings, calculations, specifications, cutting files. Quotations for design can be obtained on request, once design requirements are provided by the Client.
What is typical cost of design?
The cost of design will normally be 5…10% of boat construction cost. For smaller boats, it can be 20% and more. The design work don’t to CE or to classification is quite expensive, due to large number of calculations, drawings and required expertise.
Do you have experience with rules of classification societies? With CE-certification and RCD? With Australian AMSA/NSCV?
Yes, we have all these experiences. Moreover, our team members are members of the technical committees for ISO standards and rules of classification societies.
How to choose the designer?
There are few things to look at:
- Whom are you dealing with? Is it legal company, with work permits and business licenses? (Normally available through government business portal)
- Who are team members? Are they staff of design office or just freelancers contracted for the job?
- What is the qualification of key team members? Many people call themselves ‘boat designers’ or even ‘naval architects’ without having any proper degree. (copies of qualifications are welcome).
- Any information on previously launched boats? Are they new builds or just a refit? Level of participation of the designer in those projects?
- Does the designer have experience with yacht-quality builds? With sailboats? With composites?
- Does the designer have experience working with classification societies or CE-certification? If not, the designs might be of substandard quality. (Ask to show approved drawings or boat certificates).
- Does the designer sell stock designs or they are custom designs? Stock designs are cheaper option but they might be incomplete or outdated, and there is no customization available.
- Can we have meeting in the design office? It is important to see the operation and meet the design team.
Why don’t I just order the design to a freelancer? Freelancers are cheaper!
Freelancer might be helpful if one needs a simple 15…20’ boat design, or a Bimini top design for a yacht. For any serious design work, the freelance or ‘one man show’ designer won’t have enough capability. Freelancers often work without quality control, have limited skills, and to add - poor time management. Unlike a proper design team, one person just can’t have all the required expertise in marine design, naval architecture, engineering, production techniques, interior design, knowledge of rules and standards, etc. So why take a risk?
The common feature of all failed projects – all of them saved on design!
We have a design already, can you develop it into technical drawings?
We care our reputation and normally we try do make a complete design work – from first sketches to cutting files. We have our own very experienced design team. Making all design within one team ensures it is stylish, feasible, buildable boat and compiles to the rules and standards.
